Dark money refers to political spending by organizations that don’t have to disclose their donors. These groups — often hiding behind nonprofit status — pour millions into campaigns to influence elections without the public knowing who’s paying the bills.
The result? Ads flood our screens and mailboxes with half-truths and smear campaigns, and we’re left in the dark about who’s really behind them — foreign interests? Corporations? Billionaires with agendas?
That’s not how accountability works.
Super PACs can raise unlimited sums of money and spend it freely to support or attack candidates — as long as they technically don’t coordinate with campaigns. But in practice, the lines are blurred, and the loopholes are wide open.
Even worse, some groups use nonprofit shells to funnel cash into super PACs, keeping the original donors anonymous. These aren’t average voters pitching in a few bucks — they’re mega-donors using every trick in the book to shape the outcomes they want.
